I study how AI systems and online platforms shape decision-making, public discourse, identity, and access to information. My projects follow these technologies through the institutions that govern them, the methods used to evaluate them, and the communities that live with them, with a particular focus on South Asia and its diasporas. Examining how governments document, deploy, and govern AI in immigration, social services, and education, and how people subject to these systems experience and contest them.
Auditing language technologies and generative AI for identity-based biases in low-resource contexts, and building datasets and tools that let affected communities shape evaluation and repair.
Examining how digital platforms shape identity, expression, and safety for historically marginalized communities across South Asia, through decolonial and sociotechnical perspectives.
